The Art of Silly
I have always bee drawn to 'the art of silly' - having been raised on Peanuts, Dr Seuss, Warner Bros and Hanna Barbera cartoons, and the 3 stooges... Eventually, Monty Python, The Far Side, and Calvin & Hobbes would help round off an already pretty fair list of inspirations. It may have been Charles Schulz and the Peanuts gang who taught me how to draw when I was just a wee tot, but it was the brilliance, and simplicity of Gary Larson's 'Far side' that drove me to want to create some 'silliness' of my own. I began drawing single panel cartoons some time in the late 80s. (Single panel worked best for me because I can't draw the same thing twice). They were pretty good according to the feedback I received. 'Foibles', as it was called, made it into a few newspapers, and I began sending out many packages to syndicates, bigger publications, etc... I have a brilliant collection of rejection letters btw if anyone's interested. I regrettably let it go after some time – but after my son was born, and I got reacquainted with my old pal, Dr Seuss, I was inspired to start writing... I began by writing 2 full length rhyming books for 2 of my nieces as birthday gifts, and just rolled on from there – the rest, as they say, is history!
Take a look at a few samples I have here on the site, and feel free to let me know what you think.
Thanks, and enjoy!
